COVID-19 Opinion Tracker - Edition 8

The eighth Kekst CNC international tracking survey shows surprising responses when it comes to the public’s confidence in their country’s economic situation, uptakes in vaccine roll-outs and the reputation of Governments and large businesses.

This study shows that countries with strong vaccine rollouts have seen higher public confidence and an overall positive perception of government and business performance, particularly so in the UK and U.S.. But where the vaccine rollout has been seen to be too slow, confidence has been badly damaged with Germany, in particular, now appearing to be experiencing a profound crisis of confidence in its state institutions.

The workplace has also experienced an unexpected turn, with two-thirds of workers expressing an eagerness to return to the office more regularly instead of working from home. And as travel begins to open up, most consumers don't mind test requirements and early airport arrivals. Business travel is likely to see a comeback as well, with half of regular business travellers planning to go abroad for business in 2021.

Reputations have been made and remade over the past 12 months. Voters and consumer have been much more willing to reappraise entrenched viewpoints based on immediate experiences of how Governments and businesses have delivered for them, and their communities. It’s unclear whether attitudes formed in the pressure of this year of uncertainty will be locked in for the long term, as restrictions unwind, and some economies return to some sense of normality. Tough choices lie ahead for politicians and businesses leaders. But for the moment, they are being viewed through the same lens.
