While the conversation spanned topics ranging from AI and industrial policy to talent and sustainability, a common thread emerged throughout the morning: Europe’s competitiveness will depend on stronger eco-system coordination, targeted investment and, above all, enabling effective scale-up execution.

A Strong Brand, But Growing Competition

Reflections from VivaTech Paris reinforced Sweden's reputation as a global leader in innovation and sustainability. Speakers highlighted the value of bringing Swedish companies, policymakers and investors together on international platforms to foster partnerships, attract investment and strengthen cross-border collaboration.

At the same time, competition for talent, capital and technological leadership is intensifying. Maintaining Sweden's position will depend not only on innovation, but also on the ability to scale ideas and translate them into long-term growth.

Europe's Competitiveness Agenda Takes Center Stage

Europe's focus on technological sovereignty and competitiveness featured prominently throughout the discussion. Initiatives such as the Savings and Investments Union and the Scale-Up Fund were highlighted as important steps toward creating stronger conditions for innovation and growth across the region.

Speakers agreed that Europe has a clear understanding of the challenges it faces. The priority now is ensuring that policy ambitions are translated into practical outcomes that strengthen the continent's ability to compete globally.

Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Industry

Several participants emphasized the need for closer collaboration between policymakers and the private sector. While Sweden remains well positioned in research, technology and innovation, there were calls for greater alignment around long-term competitiveness and innovation priorities.

The discussion underscored the importance of creating conditions that allow new technologies and businesses to develop, commercialize and scale more effectively.

Talent, Capital and the Conditions for Growth

Talent emerged as one of Sweden's most important competitive advantages. Stockholm continues to benefit from a strong and connected innovation ecosystem, but speakers argued that attracting and retaining talent should remain a strategic priority.

Access to capital was identified as another key strength. Sweden's capital markets continue to support innovation and entrepreneurship, although challenges remain in helping companies scale at the same pace as global competitors.

Sustainability as Business Strategy

The conversation also highlighted the evolving role of sustainability. Rather than being treated as a standalone objective, sustainability is increasingly becoming integrated into broader business strategies and investment decisions.

Examples shared throughout the discussion demonstrated how companies are leveraging innovation and technology to drive both commercial performance and sustainability outcomes, reinforcing the growing connection between competitiveness and long-term value creation.

The Challenge Is No Longer Diagnosis

A recurring conclusion throughout the morning was that Europe's challenges are already well understood. Whether the discussion focused on innovation policy, talent, investment or sustainability, there was broad agreement on the priorities ahead.

The Defining Challenge Now, is Execution

For Sweden, maintaining its position as one of the world's leading innovation economies will require continued investment, stronger collaboration across sectors and a relentless focus on turning ideas into impact. The foundations are in place. The next chapter will depend on how effectively ambition is translated into commercial market demand and scaling adoption of what’s being innovated.
